A Relationship Gram is like a genogram. They are flexible tools and can be used for many things and in a variety of ways. A doctor is encouraged to generate one with each of their patients and also encourage the patient to fill out their own.
While therapy is in progress, they can compare their perceptions and the Relationship Grams each has generated.
As Relationship Grams grow, the life of the patient is more complex and understood in terms that the patient themselves should guide and define.
Patients might only feel comfortable with putting only a few circles in their relationship grams, but their lives might actually be much bigger.
The numbers in a Relationship Gram correlate to people. The number 1 is the patient. In psychoanalyses, numbers 2 & 3 are usually the persons closest to the patient. They also might represent the persons which produce their anxiety. In the presenting complaint of a child, positions 2 & 3 should be occupied by the child’s parents or guardians.
